Choosing WP

The Warren-Prescott School’s mission is to provide a high quality, well-rounded educational experience that prepares its students for success in school and beyond. We strive to instill a love for learning, to engender critical thinking, to promote in each child a respect for self and others, and to foster the ideals of a democratic society.

At the Warren-Prescott School we are committed to:

  • 5Providing a nurturing and inclusive school environment
  • Creating a culture of high expectations for our community
    of learners and faculty
  • Supporting the intellectual, physical, emotional and social
    needs of our students
  • Pursuing continuous school improvement

ACADEMICS

Warren-Prescott teachers team with their peers, with students and with families to set ambitious student goals and work collaboratively to achieve success in meeting these goals. Instruction is differentiated so that all students’ needs are met. The core curriculum consists of Math, English Language Arts, Science, Spanish and Social Studies. Additional weekly enrichment activities for all students include art, music and physical education. There are also elective offerings such as musical theater, band, orchestra and debate club.

Our instructional approach offers a mix of teacher-led instruction combined with hands-on learning; in both instances, problem solving and student inquiry on subject matter is encouraged and is central to success in the classroom.

Warren-Prescott students are well-prepared for their next steps. In recent years, more than half of Warren-Prescott’s 6th grade students are accepted to exam schools, with additional students accepted in 8th grade. While test scores are a limited measure of school quality, Warren-Prescott’s test scores are comparable to the best schools in Boston and its suburbs.

EXTENDED DAY PROGRAMS

12An optional fee-based extended day program is offered for prekindergarten, kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students. This program runs from 3:10 – 6:00pm and is led by teachers. In addition to teacher-led activities and homework time, children can enroll in enrichment activities such as Lego robotics, Tae Kwon Do, French, Soccer, and Piano.

For 3rd grade through 6th grade teacher-led homework help is offered from 3:10-4:00 pm. After homework help, these students have the option to go to the local Boys and Girls Club for additional enrichment activities.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Families form the heart and soul of the Warren-Prescott Community. Parents have a strong voice at the school and are considered partners in supporting children to achieve the challenging academic goals set in the classroom. There are many diverse opportunities for parent engagement including serving posts on school and district councils, acting as class parent coordinators, volunteering in classrooms and on field trips, planning fundraising events, and much more.

Parents are provided with ample information about what is going on at the school and in the classroom in order to support the important connection between school and home. Core information sources include a weekly school-wide newsletter, individual classroom Shutterfly websites, and frequent communication from class parents. Teachers and school administrators encourage parents to reach out as needed and set aside time to accommodate parent meetings.

Family and school-hosted events to build community occur frequently throughout the year.

2In addition to two buildings where the lower and middle schools are housed, Warren-Prescott’s facilities include multiple outside spaces that are well utilized during the school day and beyond. The Learning Garden provides space for hands-on classroom activities such as planting, composting and examining the garden ecosystem while the Backyard Playscape offers space for free play. The playground is also home to many structured games and activities and serves as a location for school-wide events including Field Day, Spirit Day, summer barbecues for incoming families, and class-wide social events.

WHAT’S NEW!

In the spirit of continuous improvement, the Warren-Prescott School has had some exciting new developments that we are proud to share with prospective families:

Extended Learning Time:  The Warren-Prescott School has added 40 minutes to the traditional 6-hour school day, an exciting change that allows the school to expand its academic and school day enrichment offerings. Extended learning time has enabled additional instructional time for science, art and music, acceleration/intervention coursework integrated into the school day, Spanish language instruction for all students beginning in pre-Kindergarten, and additional time for new and innovative teacher-led projects.

Partnership with Achievement Network (ANET):  Warren-Prescott teachers are committed to providing targeted instruction for students. Our partnership with ANET gives teachers real-time information and tools to create specific learning objectives for each student.

Foreign Language Offering:  In collaboration with the Director of World Languages for the Boston Public Schools, Warren-Prescott has introduced Foreign language instruction into the core curriculum beginning in pre-Kindergarten. The School now has one full-time and one part-time Spanish instructor on staff to develop and implement this new addition to the curriculum.

K-1 (Pre-Kindergarten) Class:  Warren-Prescott had its first K1 cohort of 22 four-year-old students start in the fall of 2015. This class, like our kindergarten classrooms, is staffed with a full-time teacher and a  full-time assistant teacher.
